Press Statements from Members of the Alaska Senate Democratic Caucus on Passage of SB54
Members of the Alaska Senate Democratic Caucus commented on the Senate’s vote of concurrence with SB54 in this evening’s floor session which concluded sine die.
Senator Bill Wielechowski (D-Anchorage): “Instead of taking steps now to make some fairly easy fixes and ensure that this bill doesn’t violate the Constitution, the Republican Senate Majority opted to cut bait, all but guaranteeing we’ll be in court fighting expensive lawsuits.”
Senator Tom Begich (D-Anchorage): “The senate not only left without making Alaskans safer on the biggest crime issue of this special session, they did nothing to secure our fiscal future.”
Senator Donny Olson (D-Golovin): “The Senate leadership decided not to do the hard work. They could have fixed a couple of mistakes and got to work on a fiscal plan. Instead, they’re going home.”
Senator Dennis Egan (D-Juneau): “We just saw the Senate Majority’s plan: spend more money on lawyers to defend an unconstitutional screw-up, and do nothing to fix the fiscal gap.”
