Senate Democratic Leader Berta Gardner Responds to Governor’s
Call for a Fourth Special Session
“We applaud Governor Walker for calling the legislature back to session, insisting that we address revenue measures. We join him in refusing to accept procrastination as Alaska’s credit rating falls and unemployment rises. We urge our colleagues to help craft a fair and sustainable fiscal plan.
“We were sent to Juneau to do the hard work, and make the difficult and sometimes unpopular decisions that are best for the state and its people. It’s a call many of us take seriously. There is no reason we should wait until all our savings are gone before we act. I hope that legislators from both bodies, and all points on the political spectrum will come together and get this done now, before the state goes into full financial meltdown.”
Senator Bill Wielechowski has asked the Governor to add SJR1 to the special session call. This would put the question to the people as to whether the PFD should be enshrined in the Alaska Constitution to protect it for future generations.
"We have tried every means available legislatively and through the judicial branch to protect and preserve the permanent fund dividend for the people of Alaska. It's time to let the people decide," said Senator Wielechowski.
"Alaskans deserve fiscal stability and certainty. The PFD keeps tens of thousands of Alaskans out of poverty and off government services and it bolsters our private sector economy. This is the time, and this action is our last chance to keep the dividend for the people, as it was intended." ... See MoreSee Less
